Engelbert Humperdinck Last Waltz
Monday, April 21st, 2008Engelbert Humperdinck, the British-American pop singer known worldwide for his touching love songs, has a long and expansive career. Among his greatest works is The Last Waltz, a tragic love ballad that spent five weeks at number one on the British charts in 1967.
The song details the beginning and end of the narrator’s relationship with the woman he loves. Last Waltz is actually a double entendre, referring both to the final waltz of the party where they first met and to the last dance they have once their relationship has effectively hit its end. The song was one of many that earned Humperdinck his status as a crooner, something he doesn’t necessarily agree with.
The Engelbert Humperdinck Last Waltz met with only moderate success in the United States as opposed to Britain, but achieved enough notoriety that it is still played frequently on Adult Standards radio stations today.
